Christmas Dinner Wines

The Holiday season is an excellent time for celebrations with family, friends and co-workers. Usually spent at the dinner table, these gatherings give us the opportunity to create lovely and exciting wine and food pairings. Of course the menu changes according to the ethnic background of the family or the type of restaurant visited.

Here are a few suggestions of high quality wines to accompany the more traditional dishes usually served during the holiday period. These flavourful wines should marry well and enhance your festive evenings. Cheers!

A sparkling wine for the canapés :

88 Brut Prestige, Mumm Napa, California 26,95 $ 11442701

California sparklers usually give you a bigger bang for your buck than most Champagnes. This Napa version displays a delicate fruity nose of apples and green strawberry. Quite refined, fresh and flavourful, it should surprise and satisfy the Champagne enthusiast.

An intense white for oysters on the shell :

88 Arboleda Sauvignon Blanc 2011 Leyda, Eduardo Chadwick, Chile 19,15 $ 11256626

In the last decade, Chilean Sauvignons have favourably progressed. They seduce with their intense and lasting flavours. The Arboleda cuvée confirms this trend. Its exuberant nose reveals aromas of guava, passion fruit and grapefruit. A fresh well balanced Sauvignon that lingers.

A superb red for the Christmas turkey :

90 La Folie 2010 Saumur-Champigny, Château Yvonne, France 22,40 $ 11665534

Made with Cabernet Franc, this outstanding Loire valley red is bound to please even the most demanding connoisseur. Flavourful and seductive, this remarkable Saumur brims with bright ripe fruit. Well balanced, medium bodied, soft textured, its ripe flavours linger. A charming nose displays berry, bell pepper and potato scents. This easy to drink red should evolve favourably for the next 3 to 5 years.

And for red meats :

90 Clos de Cuminaille 2010 Saint-Joseph, Pierre Gaillard, France 34,50 $ 11231963

A fairly unknown appellation from the Northern Rhône valley, Saint-Joseph produces remarkable wines that should be discovered. Superb typical Syrah nose : wild berries, pepper, smoke with a hint of animal. From the excellent 2010 vintage, the Clos de Cuminaille cuvée displays good extract, fresh acidity, intense lingering flavours and great balance.

For chocolate desserts : an excellent Port

88 Porto Late Bottled Vintage 2007 Offley, Portugal 20,15 $ 483024

True to its house style, the Offley LBV is quite rich and full while remaining soft and charming. Blackberries, licorice and anis on this very charming Port that could improve with a few years (2 to 3) of aging. Excellent well priced LBV Port !
